EU and UK Right of Withdrawal
For consumers in the European Union (EU), the law is clear: Withdrawing from an e-commerce contract should be as easy as buying the products in the first place. If you live in the EU and bought our products online, you have two weeks to back out for no reason.
Consumers in the UK enjoy a similar right to revoke a distance-selling contract.
You’ll find the official legal wording on this page under “Your Rights as an EU Consumer,” but here’s the short version: After letting us know within 14 days of receiving the goods that you want to withdraw, you’ll need to return any unwanted items within the next 14 days before we can issue a refund, again within 14 days of receiving the goods back. The cost of return shipping is on you, but we’ll reimburse the original delivery fee up to the value of standard shipping as part of your refund. We’ll use the same payment method as your original purchase, and there’s no extra fees for the transaction. You’re allowed to unbox the goods and handle them like you would in a physical store before returning them.

Your Rights as an EU Consumer
Consumers in Germany and the European Union enjoy a statutory right of withdrawal. Below is our English version of the legal text, modeled after the official German template. This European Union webpage has more information in English.
Right of Withdrawal
You have the right to withdraw from the contract by cancelling your order within 14 days (“cooling-off period”). You do not need to state a reason.
The cooling-off period is 14 days from the day you (or a third party designated by you who is not the carrier) take(s) charge of the goods. If the cooling-off period expires on a non-working day, it extends to the next working day.
To exercise your right of withdrawal, you must inform us of your decision to withdraw from the contract through an unequivocal statement to that effect. Your declaration may take any form, and we provide several methods for your convenience:

- An email sent to us at friends@bakst.de or another email address associated with us
- The print template provided here, or a simple letter, signed and mailed to our postal address:

If you use the online withdrawal form to declare your withdrawal from the contract, you will receive confirmation shortly afterward, usually (but not necessarily) by email, that we have received your declaration.
It is sufficient for you to submit your declaration of withdrawal within the cooling-off period for it to be valid.
Effects of Withdrawal
If you withdraw from the contract, we will reimburse all payments received from you in connection with your order. This refund will include the original cost of delivery, but not any additional costs resulting from your choice of a delivery option other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us.
We will issue the refund no later than 14 days after we receive your declaration of withdrawal. We will carry out such reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction unless you have expressly agreed otherwise. In any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we receive the returned goods or you supply evidence of having sent them back, whichever comes first. You must return the goods to us (see above) or to our carrier (see below) no later than 14 days after communicating your withdrawal to us. The deadline is met if you send the goods within that time period.
You will be responsible for the direct cost of returning the goods to us or the following carrier:

You will only be liable for any diminished value of the goods insofar as the loss of value results from your handling beyond what is reasonably necessary to determine the nature, characteristics, and functionality of the goods.
Non-EU Customers
Different rules apply to customers outside the European Union. Below is a reader-friendly summary of our refund and return policies for non-EU customers.
If the EU right of withdrawal doesn’t apply to you, we follow your country’s basic statutory requirements.
UK Customers
Consumer laws governing distance selling in the United Kingdom are similar to the EU when it comes to refunds and returns.
Right to Cancel
As a UK customer, the 2015 Consumer Rights Act grants you the right to cancel your order within 14 days of receiving it. The goods don’t need to be faulty, and you don’t need to state a reason. To cancel, you must inform us within the 14-day period. Then you have another 14 days to return the goods.
We’ll refund you within 14 days of receiving the goods back. Refunds include the cost of standard delivery, but not the added cost of more expensive shipping options. We’ll process your refund through the same means of payment as you used for the original purchase.
We won’t deduct any fees unless the goods have been used or damaged. You’re allowed to handle the goods in the same way you would in a shop. For example, you can take items out of the box to see what they look like and check for faults.

Right to Repair
Furthermore, if you accept an item but later discover a fault, you may be entitled to a repair or replacement. We’ll repair or replace the item if you return it within six months, unless we can prove it wasn’t faulty when you bought it. You can still reject the item after that. After six months, the burden of proof shifts to you and we can ask for proof that the item was faulty when you bought it. You have up to six years (five in Scotland) to make a claim for an item you’ve bought from us.
Your right to a free repair or replacement applies regardless of any warranties or guarantees for a given product. We may only ask for proof of purchase in the form of a sales receipt or other evidence such as a bank statement or packaging.
In practice, a minor typo doesn’t make a book faulty in the consumer-law sense. By contrast, if your copy of a book contains missing pages, printing errors that render parts of it unreadable, or glaring editorial mistakes that undermine its usefulness as a learning resource, you may very well be entitled to a replacement or refund. The Consumer Rights Act applies a quality test to published works, including digital content such as e-books, to see “if it meets the standard that a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, taking account of” its description, price, and other relevant factors.

Swiss Customers
Of course, customers anywhere in the world including Switzerland have the right to a refund on products that are damaged, faulty, or otherwise unfit for purpose on delivery. However, Swiss consumers don’t have the same 14-day statutory right of withdrawal from distance-selling contracts as their neighbors in the EU and UK.
Buyers in Switzerland who change their mind about an order can still request a refund using the online form on this page. We’ll respond with further information and offer a solution to your request as required.
For Swiss customers, regular product returns are discretionary and may incur a processing fee. If we agree to a return request, you’ll receive a refund equal to the order value including taxes and standard shipping costs but excluding import duties (tariffs) and our return fee if applicable. Once we’ve received the relevant goods, we’ll promptly issue a refund to the same payment source used for your original order unless otherwise agreed.
